Photograph: Steve Thomas - Director.Steve is the Managing Director of Grass Routes which he established in 1985, following his experiences as a team leader with Operation Drake, Operation Raleigh and The Mary Rose Salvage Expedition. This led him into the field of management and leadership development. He has worked in the private sector at all levels from the shop floor to CEO in companies ranging from blue chip to SMEs. He has also worked extensively in the public and voluntary sectors. Steve is a firm believer in action centred learning and the transfer and application of learning back to the work place.

Consultancy inputs include training needs analysis and training design and implementation. Areas of particular strength include: organisational development, team and leadership development, executive coaching and soft skill inputs. Steve believes strongly in forming long-term relationships with his clients. The past five years has seen an increase of work in the area of CSR.

Steve is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development, Fellow of the Institute of Business Consultants, a Fellow of the Institute of Leadership and Management, an Investors in People Leadership Advisor, a visiting tutor at Cranfield University and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.

June Burrough, MA in Management Development and Training, Director of Pierian Training Centre.

Facilitator and Consultant

June’s unique training style has developed through over 30 years working as an actress and theatre administrator. Her approach, whether in the area of personal development or organisational change management, enables groups and individuals to find their own answers to problems and to maximise their potential.

June has extensive experience in the private, public and voluntary sectors as a consultant and facilitator.

 

Ruth Bradbrook, BSc, PGCE, Dip Psy, RT Cert

Facilitator

Ruth has a Post Graduate Certificate of Education in Outdoor Education and a Post Graduate Diploma in Facilitation and Humanistic Psychology. She is a Reality Therapy certified practitioner.

In addition to these qualifications she also holds the following certificates: British Mountaineering Council Single Pitch Award for Climbing, Mountain Leader Summer MLTB, British Canoe Union Level 3 (inland and Sea) and Outdoor first Aid.

Ruth is a qualified practitioner in Reality Therapy and Lead Management. She has eleven years experience working in the voluntary youth sector dealing directly with young people, as well as at a staff and organisational development level. The majority of her work has been with Fairbridge, a national youth charity, as a Team Leader and Training and Development Manager.

Her adaptability and sense of fun always adds energy and motivation to the learning environment. Areas of expertise include experiential learning, using dynamic and creative activities, leadership and change management, team development; working with difficult and challenging people and life coaching.

Ruth is a member of the British triathlon team, ranked number ten in the world. She has competed twice in the Cross New Zealand Adventure Race.

 

Malcolm Love, BA, Dip PS with postgraduate studies in counselling, communications and the media.

Facilitator and Consultant – Communications

Malcolm specialises in training Media and Presentation skills for groups and individuals. He was a Senior Producer at the BBC for many years with responsibility for News and Current Affairs. In his career, he has produced and directed John Humphrys, Brian Redhead, Kate Adie, Ian Hislop, John Peel, Alexie Sayle, Clare Rayner and John Cleese.

As a trainer Malcolm has worked at a senior level in the BBC as well as for major blue chip companies at all levels from junior trainees to CEOs. Currently, Malcolm is teaching communication skills to staff and postgraduates at Imperial College London.

 

Dick Willis, BSc, PGCE, Dip Ed, Dip Training Management, MCIPD, FRGS.

Facilitator and Consultant

Dick’s interests lie in team development and project management using virtual world technology. Previous positions include project co-ordinator for SBLN Ltd, delivering internet training and implementing the “Web for Schools” programme, project manager for the NHS training division, director of the Avon Training Agency and Manager of the Bristol Climbing Centre. Dick now works mainly for the DTI.

He has led 22 major overseas expeditions, one of which led to him discovering the worlds largest cave system in Mount Mulu, Borneo.

He has over 20 years experience in outdoor development training, working at all levels with the private, public and voluntary sectors.

 

Nick Martin, BSc Hons, MSc in Management Development and Training

Facilitator and Coach

Nick’s background was as a chartered accountant with Ernst and Young. His training skills are in matching the needs of organisations with those of individual employees to ensure the success of both. Nick is fully up to date with management training techniques and works with groups and individuals.

One-to-one coaching is a keen area of interest to Nick who uses this technique to great success during training sessions. He has qualifications as a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach (CPCC) and as a TraCo-Active Coach (CPCC), awarded by the Coaches Training Institute, and accredited by the ICF.

 

Moira Viggers

Facilitator

Moira’s speciality is in the area of personal security. She designs and delivers training for groups who have to deal with violence and aggression in the work place. She was a trainer with Group 4 for eleven years and has worked with a range of clients in the public and private sectors. Moira is a qualified Myers Briggs Assessor (MBTI).

 

Nikki Channon

Events Coordinator

Nikki’s background is in event coordination and prior to working with Grass Routes she was events coordinator for ACF, the largest corporate hospitality provider in the South West. Her bubbly personality combined with her strong sense of purpose and eye for detail equip her well for this role. Her other work includes a very lively singing career.

 

Andy Hills, B.eng

Outdoor Activity coordinator

Andy has been involved in delivering training through outdoor activities since 1996. He was the Senior Instructor and Operations Manager for Devon Adventure Training and is now Senior Instructor for Bristol City Council. Andy has experience of working at all levels within the Private, Public and Voluntary sectors

He currently holds the following training certificates: British Mountaineering Council Single Pitch Award for Climbing, Mountain Leader Summer MLTB, Mountain Leader Trained Winter MLTB, NCA National Cave Leader award, British Canoe Union Level 3 kayak coach with A1* entitlements (inland), British Canoe Union Level 3 coach(sea), Royal Yacht Association Power Boat Level 2 and Outdoor First Aid.

He is now working towards his Mountain Instructors Award, The highest level in the field. He has worked at all levels within the private, public and voluntary sectors.

 

Mike Bennett, BSc Hons

Outdoor Activity coordinator

Mike has over 20 years experience in outdoor development training, working at all levels with the private, public and voluntary Sectors. Formerly, Mike was manager of Skern Lodge in Devon and the Grenville House centre in Devon.

Mike is highly qualified in training, safety and leading outdoor activities and holds the following certificates: Mountain Leader Summer MLTB, British Mountaineering Council Single Pitch Award for Climbing, NCA National Cave Leader Award Level 2 and Member of the Devon Cave Rescue Group. He is a Royal Yacht Association Coastal Skipper, Royal Yacht Association Senior instructor Dinghy, Royal Yacht Association Power boat level 3, British Sun Aqua Club Sport Diver and has Mountain First Aid.

 

Steve Booker

Outdoor Activity Tutor

Steve has over 20 years experience in outdoor development training, working at all levels with the private, public and voluntary sectors. He holds the following qualifications: Mountain Leader Summer MLTB, British Mountaineering Council Single Pitch Award for Climbing, CCPR Sport leader, Local Cave Leader Award. Additionally, Steve has an advanced First Aid Certificate and is a volunteer for the Mountain Rescue Team in the Black Mountains of South Wales.

 

Lucy Creamer

Climbing Instructor

Ranked number ten (female) in the world Lucy is six times winner of the British championship title. If she does not damage herself she will be working as an inspirational climbing instructor and group tutor for Grass Routes.
