Appraisals

This practical workshop helps managers to understand how to hold a truly effective appraisal for their staff; addressing key issues such as motivation, competency, critical feedback and development plans for the year ahead. It is suitable both for those new to the task and managers with experience who want to review their approach, or even who have become disenchanted with the appraisal process.
The workshop will help participants to understand the purpose of the appraisal meeting enabling them to hold an empowering and motivating appraisal, to deal with issues constructively and create a meaningful plan for the year ahead.

  • Describe how the appraisal fits within the performance management cycle
  • Explain the purpose of an appraisal
  • Identify the characteristics of a constructive appraisal
  • Structure an appraisal meeting, before, during and after.
  • List common appraiser biases
  • Identify and use performance strengths to motivate
  • Address poor performance issues positively
  • Assess performance with competency frameworks
  • Identify the essentials of planning an appraisal process
  • Set accurate SMART objectives
  • Explain the purpose of an appraisal for the ‘static employee’
  • Write a development plan for the appraisee
  • Explain the key steps of the organisation’s appraisal process and system
